Three Graves Down

You.
With your emotions
Expectations
and dreams
You took one step down
Towards the unknown.

Darkness
became comfort.
Silence
became music.
As you carry your own weight
Heavy…
Heavier
Than when you first came.

You dug deep.
Moving forward?
Or just down
In search of your present
Or past
Or even your future
You carry your own weight
Heavy
Heavier…
As the ground swallowed you up.

As if yours ain’t enough,
them came in.
With their emotions
Expectations
and dreams…
of you
Their words
that stung
like being slapped
And pushed down;
Or words
like flowers
That bloomed
from your grave
They dug;
Flowers
of goodbyes
being thrown.
And tears you drowned.

They dug deep.
In hopes of pushing forward?
Or just down
In search of a you
Or gold
Or even just dirt
For you to carry
Heavy
Heavier…
But you can’t stop.
Or fall
Or rest or slow down,
Not now.
No,
Especially not now.

But then, of course,
There’s that.
Things you forget.
Things you didn’t notice.
Or things you ignored.
A sharp rock or edge
A slippery slope
Towards death
Frustrations.
Failures.
Regret.

They pulled you down
Deeper and deeper
Where darkness
is comfort.
And silence
is music.

You dug deep.
In hopes of moving forward.
Or still down?
In search of something you lost
Or a future
The end of it all;
A place to put this weight down
Heavy
Heavier…
You can’t stop.
Or fall
Or rest or slow down,
Not now.
Not now…

Not yet.
